Bulak Nose Ornament

A gold bulak without its sliding loop. The ornament has a gold back plate with a horseshoe-shape at the top with an inner triangular form pointing upwards and a longer inverted triangle below. The piece is decorated with applied sections of beaded wirework and a granulated triangular edging. The pattern is further elaborated with applied faceted gold balls and colourful enamel in blue, yellow, green and red repoussé leaf-like shapes. There are two gold rings soldered on the back through which a sliding loop would have been inserted which would have passed through the wearer's septum.

Historical context | This shape of bulak is noted by Dr Ganguly as being a common one in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand. Traditionally it might be worn with a large-diameter nath in the left nostril. Dr Ganguly shows a photograph of a a woman from Jaunsar wearing a similar bulak tgether with a simple nose stud in her left nostril, (Ganguly,2015). |
