Emma Wensley (1799-1873) was born in Bristol and educated in Bath. After leaving school she lived with her maternal uncle’s family in Taunton, Somerset. Her acting ability was recognised and she was encouraged to seek the opinion of Charles Kemble, of the celebrated acting family. This lead to her debut at Covent Garden on 11 January 1820. Wensley developed a reputation as a Shakespearean actress, her roles including Juliet to Charles Kemble’s Romeo. She married the Shakespearean actor, James Russell, in 1826.
