Print of the actress Ellen Terry (1847-1928) as she appeared in the role of Ophelia in Hamlet, ca.1880-1900.
This print is taken from an original portrait made of the actress by the artist G.F.Watts (1817-1904). Terry was briefly married to Watts in 1864-5 and sat for a number of portraits during this period. The original portrait is now in the collection of the Watts Gallery in Surrey.
The subject of this portrait, the actress Ellen Terry, came from a theatrical family and started acting as a child. She was employed by Sir Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre in 1878 and was his leading lady until 1902. Their on-stage partnership became one of the most famous in the history of the theatre. She was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 1925.
