Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Physical description | Costume design in watercolour and pencil by Malcolm Pride for Florence in Act 1, Scene 1 of <i>Albert Herring,</i>1970. It shows a full length, profile image of a female figure dressed in a late nineteenth century style ankle length sky blue dress with a close fitting bodice with full sleeves, and a high collar. She is carrying a feather duster in her left hand and is wearing a decorative white apron over her dress and a matching white cap with a pleated brim and hanging fabric 'streamers' at the rear. A black notebook with a small pencil is just visible protruding from a pocket in her apron. Handwritten annotation providing details about colours and fabrics has been added to the design using pencil.A small sample of sky blue fabric, printed with a small motif of white flowers has been glued to the top of the design. |
