Design by Malcolm Pride for the Stage Door Keeper in The Impresario, Phoenix Opera Company, Bath, 1968.

Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Physical description
Design for the Stage Door Keeper in <i>The Impresario,</i> Phoenix Opera Company, Bath, 1968. It shows a full length male figure wearing a dark grey mid eighteenth century style suit consisting of a coat with a fulll, pleated skirt and sleeves with a wide, turned back cuff. He is also dressed in a long waistcoat, rough knee breeches and stockings with pale red slippers. A long grey scarf, white neckcloth and wig also form part of his costume. He is shown in profile and carries a loop of keys at his waist.

Handwritten annotation providing details about fabric and colours has been added to the design using pencil.
