Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Physical description | Design by Malcolm Pride for an unidentified character in The Escape from the Seraglio,1967. It shows a full length female figure dressed in a knee length tunic with a close fitting low bodice, and wide skirt, worn over full, 'harem style trousers.' Both the tunic and trousers are white, with a small green motif pattern repeating across the surface. The figure is also wearing high, pale blue/grey turban, trimmed with a plumed white feather and with a white veil. This veil is draped across the bottom half of her face, and is also suspended from the sides and rear of the turban. Small samples of fabric, one white with a grid of pink stripes and woven with a green motifs, and the others a section of green machine lace and pale pink woven braid, have been pinned to the design. Handwritten annotation has been added to the design using pencil. |
