The publisher Aime Maeght (1906-1981) began working as a draughtsman lithographer in Cannes in 1927 and in the 1930s opened Cannes first art gallery 'ARTE'. In 1945 he was publishing in Paris. His support of such artists as Bonnard, Braque, Miro, Giacometti and Picasso, has made him one of the most important and influential gallerists and publishers of the 20th century.
Mourlot Freres were one of the most influential forces in the development of lithographic printing among artists in France in the 20th century. The family company dated back to the 19th century but became a greater focus for artists' printmaking under master lithographer Fernand Mourlot (1895-1988). Mourlot Freres worked with the greatest artists of their time, such as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Miro, Giacometti, Leger and Chagall.
The great Spanish artist Joan Miro made his first lithographs in Barcelona in 1940 and then after the war with Mourlot Freres, in Paris, where he made his first colour lithographs in 1947 and Album 13 followed a year later.
