This small frame would once have housed a miniature, perhaps a portrait or a pastoral scene. It is carved in the neo-classical style, inspired by the arts and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. The stylized motifs around the inner and outer edges act as a foil to the more naturalistic, and virtuoso, carving of oak leaves, acorns, laurel sprigs and ribbons. This style was the height of fashion in the 1770s and 1780s.
