Place of origin

Costume design by Pamela Howard for Timothy West as Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1, English Touring Theatre, 1996-97.

English Touring Theatre's productions of Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, directed by Stephen Unwin, opened at the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe, on 1 October 1996 and then toured to 11 British venues, including the Old Vic, where it played for a month from 28 January 1997.

This design was included in an exhibition on Pamela Howard's work, held at the Rona Gallery in London to coincide with the performances at the Old Vic. In the accompanying brochure, Pamela Howard noted: 'When thinking about designing a play I work from the actors outwards, with the aim of presenting the human being in a powerful and dramatic way. Another preoccupation is to cast the fabrics the actors wear. If the fabric is wrong, no amount of redesigning will get the right performance out of it, and this applies to clothes of all periods.'
