Strauss’s operetta Die Fledermaus is a favourite of opera companies around the world and has been regularly adapted for film and television. This design by Eileen Diss is for an English language version made for BBC television and shown on BBC1 on 26 December 1971. The cast included David Hillman as Eisenstein, Sheila Armstrong as his wife, Roselinde, Anne Pashley as the maid Adele, Ann Howard in the trouser role of Prince Orlofsky and Bernard Bresslaw in the speaking part of Frosch, the gaoler. The music was provided by the New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Raymond Leppard and the production was directed by John Gorrie. Eileen Diss’s designs for this production, and for a 1971 TV adaptation of Cider with Rosie, were nominated for a 1972 BAFTA Award.
Act II of Strauss's operetta is set in a summer house at Count Orlofsky's villa. For the television production the scene was opened out to include the ballroom and a garden terrace.
