Earring
1800-1900 (made)
Place of origin |
In style these earrings appear to come from the first half of the seventeenth century. However, the pearl and gold fittings from which the main body of the earrings hangs are later than the main body. The gold wires from which the seven pearls on each earring hang are of a different colour to the gold of the main body, and it seems likely that these and the pearls are also later. The earrings can be compared with V&A Museum No. 58&A-1898, described as seventeenth century. However, the style persisted into the nineteenth century in the traditional jewellery of Italy and it has been suggested these earrings with their regular box settings mounted with rock crystal triplets probably come from the nineteenth century.
