In 1947, Val Parnell took over the management of the London Palladium, one of the largest theatres in Britain. Under Parnell, the Palladium presented large-scale spectacular pantomimes until 1987 and became known as the Home of Pantomime due to its lavish productions featuring the biggest celebrity names of the time.
1952's Dick Whittington starred comedian Frankie Howerd as Idle Jack and comic actor Richard ‘Mr Pastry’ Hearne as Mate. The show’s scenery, designed by Charles Reading, achieved great praise, with the Daily Telegraph describing it as “lavish spectacle” and Ivor Brown in the Daily Express commending the production’s “nice clean colouring, great dash and speed, and […] fine efficiency in its ‘effects’.”
The show also featured Jimmy Currie’s Water Scena and Knie’s Chimpanzees trained by Captain A Smith.
