The Gallery, Level 2: Abstraction

Print
2009 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Peter Lawrence is one of the UK’s leading wood-engravers. Wood engravings are traditionally small, cut into endgrain boxwood and printed from the relief surface. However, the majority of Lawrence’s prints are engraved on Resingrave, a synthetic material designed especially to replicate the quality of boxwood. This allows him to work on a much larger scale. His work often explores concepts of mapping, and the visual language of maps, mazes and diagrams, as well as letter forms and typography. This print playfully explores the visual iconography of mapping and way-finding, and the ways in which these ideas are reflected in or draw upon modes of geometric abstraction.
