Place of origin |
This brooch is part of Esther Knobel’s ‘Immigrants’ series, which featured colourful figures - circus artists and ancient emperors – cut from Chinese tin boxes which had originally contained tea, and which she found in an old shop on Jaffa Street, Jerusalem.
The rabbit, an immigrant in respect of having been imported with the tea, along with the other colourful figures in the series, represents ‘a joyful mood, playfulness, an escape and a break from the seriousness of creativity’ for the artist (see Esther Knobel ‘The mind in the hand’ Jerusalem 2008, page XII).
This brooch is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
