Sir Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was best known as a photographer. Beaton also worked as an illustrator, a diarist, and designer for stage and film. He won three Oscars for costume and art direction for the film version of My Fair Lady (1965) and for Gigi (1958).

The sketches show the profile of a person's head, a set of four panels overlaid with a repeating blue and red pattern. In the centre of the page is a figure wearing a long white garment and yellow hat and bending to the ground. Overlapping with this image is what looks like a black and white horse against criss-crossed lines. In the bottom right corner is a repeating red and purple pattern.
