Poster advertising Le Cirque Imaginaire at the Mermaid Theatre, London, ca. 1988.
Jean Vilar's Avignon Festival gave birth to the Cirque Imaginaire in 1971. Even though it used horses, lions, dogs, monkeys as well as trapeze artists, clowns, etc., there was a radical departure right from the beginning. This first show was an outrageous spectacle with specially composed music and original designs. With the passing of the years, as the circus moved on, bit by bit the cumbersome trappings of the classical circus were abandoned. Major changes took place whereas in 1971 the circus was made up of some 30 artists and many animals it later became just two people and a few untamed animals.
Victoria Chaplin was born in Santa Monica in the US. She studied ballet and music in Switzerland. In 1969 she met Jean Baptiste Thierrée whom she later married and together they worked on the devlopment of a new form of circus which eventaually materialised into Le Cirque Imaginaire.
Jean Baptiste Thierrée was born and spent a happy childhood in Paris. He started his working life in the circus and later joined the theatre as an actor working with Roger Planchon, Jean Louis Barrault and Peter Brook in films with Alan Resnais and Fellini. He subsequently directed many music hall shows. In 1968 he returned to the circus and in the following year started to work with Victoria on the creation of Le Cirque Imaginaire.
