Place of origin

In 1998, the British non-violent direct action group Reclaim the Streets staged a street carnival of protest. The event was timed to coincide with the annual G8 summit held in Birmingham that year. Reclaim the Streets printed posters to adverstise the protest and some 8,000 people turned out to take part in the event.

The British direct action group Reclaim the Streets was born out of anti-road protest camps in the early 1990s. Over the subsequent years members of the group changed their focus, instead campaigning against the root cause of the problem as they saw it, namely the capitalist system.
