Object history | Sir Walter Trevelyan commissioned William Bell Scott to decorate the inner courtyard of his residence Wallington Hall. Scott began work in 1857 with a series of eight oil paintings illustrating the history of the English Border, which were completed in 1861. One of the paintings represents the story of ‘Bernard Gilpin making Peace among the Borders, takes down the Glove in Rothbury Church, circa 1570’ (inv. NT 584370), which is signed and dated 1859. The V&A watercolour is a highly worked up watercolour study for the oil painting. Another, more schematic study, for the painting forms part of the collections of the Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art (inv. D 4715.8 C). The V&A houses all of Scott’s watercolour designs for his Wallington Hall oil paintings (355-1891 to 362-1891). |
