Teapots such as this were used in Tibet to serve tea though not to make it. The tea itself was made by boiling brick tea with water in a cauldron and then mixing it with butter and salt in a wooden churn.

Physical description
A copper teapot with silver repousse mounts on the domed lid and surrounding the juncture of the spout and body. The handle is plain, the spout hexagonal in shape. The lid and neck section are decorated with lotus petal motifs.
