Necklace

Artist/Maker |
This necklace was made for Rian de Jong’s solo exhibition 'reisgenoten' or ‘travelling companions’ at Galerie RA, Amsterdam in 1999. She was then spending much time sailing in the Mediterranean, although this piece was made back in her studio in Amsterdam. With its wood, simply whittled, and its hammerite paint (familiar from its use in ship’s engines) it could have been made at sea. In more recent years Rian de Jong has worked solely from a studio on her boat as she travels the world.
This necklace is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
