Dress trimmed with black lace with applique 'Casablanca' motif, Stella McCartney, London, 2002
Physical description
The dress is of a classic shift shape, loose fitting with narrow straps, a shape first worn as underwear in the 1920s, which became fashionable as outerwear in the 1990s. The main body of the dress is black cotton with bands of machine lace and a large applique silk star off-centre on the front. The ruched lettering which reads ‘Casablanca’ is hand-stitched to the lace hem and wraps around the side of the dress. The slogan fits the theme of McCartney’s first collection which referenced Cockney rhyming slang. The piece fastens with large black plastic zip and poppers at the side.
