This building is one of a group that make up the private dwellings of the emperor Shah Jahan within the Fort at Agra. The Fort was built during the reign of the emperor Akbar (1556-1605) and was added to later by the Emperors Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan.

This small pavilion is entirely covered in white marble and inlaid with precious stones in the form of plant and floral motifs. In the centre of the first part of the pavilion is a sunken fountain which is just visible here.

Physical description
This photograph is of the Shah Burj, a small pavilion within the Fort at Agra. The entire pavilion is covered in white marble and intricate inlay decoration in plant and floral motifs. There are two pillars in the foreground and a man is seated beside one of them – giving a sense of scale to the structure. In the centre of the first section of the pavilion is a fountain, the carved base of which is set into the floor and can just be seen.

This photograph was initially part of the photographic collection held in the National Art Library. The markings on the mount are an indication of the history of the object, its movement through the museum and the way it is categorised.
