The Order Sant' Iago

Ornament
1862-1900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The Order of Knights of Sant' Iago was originally founded in 1170 to protect pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostella. This ornament is associated with the presentation to J.C. Robinson of the badge of the Order of Sant' Iago (A.3-2006). It is possible that it was commissioned personally by him, to be worn in conjunction with, or at other times than, the Order itself. John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), curator, scholar and collector, worked at the V&A in its earliest days and was a very important figure in the formation of the collections.
