In the twentieth century male dress continued to be characterised by sober colours and subtle patterning, yet such garments could hide rather fabulous interiors and undergarments which bore designs inspired by modern life. This man’s under-kimono (juban) reflects new opportunities for travel and holidays with its pattern of cars, trains, yachts, lighthouses, buckets, spades and life preservers.
