Place of origin |
This poster commemorates the triumph of the revolutionary uprising in Cuba, led by Fidel Castro ten years earlier. It reinforces Castro’s image as a popular revolutionary hero and seeks to validate his continuing leadership of the Cuban people.
Rene Mederos was a self-taught artist, who began his career in a Havana print shop in 1944 and went on to be one of the most prominent Cuban poster designers. He created this poster whilst working as a staff artist for the Cuban Commission of Revolutionary Orientation. The Commission was responsible for domestic public information propaganda in the form of book, brochures, billboards and posters. Despite the profusion of Cuban poster art in the 1960s and 1970's, only a very few posters feature the Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
