Evening Dress

2013-2014
Artist/Maker

This evening gown is composed of net intricately appliquéd with embroidered metallic lace and painted silk medallions showing flora and fauna. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli designed this gown for the house of Valentino's couture collection for Autumn-Winter 2013-14. Valentino Garavani, the founder, retired in 2008. Subsequently, Chiuri and Piccioli had the challenge of providing clients with a fresh, modern interpretation of the craftsmanship and design traditions of the fashion house. This gown juxtaposes the highest-quality traditional embroidery and stitching techniques with the startling impact of silk panels beautifully painted with botanically-accurate flowers and non-traditional motifs such as a rhinoceros, snake and seahorse. In 2016, Chiuri left Valentino to become the first woman creative director of the Paris couture house of Dior.

COUTURE EVENING DRESS
Valentino, Autumn/Winter 2013/14
Net with silk
It is challenging to take forward a fashion label decoupled from its founder. Since 2008, when Valentino Garavani retired, new creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have extended the firm's emphasis on couture. Their collections celebrate traditional techniques but combine them with the occasional startling element, such as the flora and fauna within the medallions of this evening dress.
