Cylindrical bag with a drawstring fastening top. Lined and trimmed with dark green shot taffeta which also forms the round base. The top and bottom edges are decorated with ruching in taffeta. The sides are knitted with coloured beads threaded on white linen thread. The background is pearly-white and the pattern consists of two baskets of flowers worked in a variety of coloured beads, mainly in red and green.

Hand-knitted cotton with coloured glass beads, finished and lined with shot taffeta. English, 1830-40
This cylindrical bag has a drawstring at the top. The beads were threaded onto the cotton in the correct order before knitting commenced - there is one bead for each stitch. The floral basket design is repeated on the other side of the bag. Beadwork knitting was developed and became very popular during the first half of the 19th century.
