Engraving showing George Bidder (1806-1878) as a young boy and sub-titled 'The Extraordinary Mental Calculator, aged 12 years', published 24 June 1818.
George Parker Bidder (13 June 1806 – 20 September 1878) displayed a natural skill at calculation from an early age. His proficiency was such that his father, William Bidder, a stonemason, exhibited him as a "calculating boy", first in local fairs up to the age of six, and later around the country. After funds were raised to provide him with a formal education Bidder went on to become a prominent and successful engineer. He is now best remembered as a leading engineer and architect.
