Ewer

700-900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This ewer belongs to a category of Chinese stoneware known as 'Changsha ware', Changsha being the name of a city in Hunan province south of the Yangzi River. The body is high-fired. The innovative feature is the appliqué decoration of grape vine highlighted in brown, providing a pleasing contrast against the buff colour of the object. The decoration would have been made separately from a mould, then adhered to the ewer, and finally a layer of brown glaze applied over it.
