Place of origin |
Full length sketch entitled 'Genl. Macready. Souvenir d'amitie, Geneviève Ward'. The sketch is not dated but appears to have been drawn by the singer and actress Dame Lucy Geneviève Teresa Ward, Countess de Guerbel (1837–1922), ca. late nineteenth century.
Geneviève Ward began her career as a singer in the 1850s, but when her operatic career was brought to an end by overwork and illness she re-established herself as a dramatic actress. Ward was particularly known for her tragic roles, and achieved success in both America and England, undertaking lengthy national and international tours. She became the first actress to be created a dame commander in the Order of the British Empire in 1921 and died on 18 August 1922 at 22 Avenue Road, London.
