Fiona Banner creates nude studies from life, transcribing visual appearances into a verbal description. These ‘wordscapes’ define the shapes and forms of the body as well as fleeting moments such as the tension in a second of shared eye contact, or a nervous finger tapping. Banner’s print is a nude study of a Paralympic cyclist. Her description presents him as though he is more a sculptural form than a human being – a piercing rod of muscle, steel buttocks, rhythmic rigidity of form – and this sense is only heightened by his carbon prosthetic leg. The focus is on strength and physicality.
