William Kent was one of the leading figures in the move away from formal gardens towards informal park landscapes. At Esher Place he was asked to design a house and garden around an existing medieval gatehouse. Here he incorporates the gatehouse into a new building with numerous views onto the open parkland. The gatehouse is shown on the left of this plan, marked out by its thicker walls.
