Print of a proof sketch drawn by John Bernard Partridge (1861-1945) for the Punch Almanack. The sketch shows Sir Henry Irving (1838–1905) preparing for the role of Napolean, which he played in a production of Madame Sans Gene by Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) staged at the Lyceum Theatre in 1897. The image is dated 1895.

From 1841-2002, Punch magazine published half a million satirical cartoons addressing subjects ranging from Domestic and Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology to Culture, Art, Fashion and Society.

Print of a proof sketch drawn by John Bernard Partridge (1861-1945) for the Punch Almanack. The sketch shows Sir Henry Irving (1838–1905) dressed in an informal suit. He is seated at a table and evidently eating whilst reading the book grasped in his left hand. A large bottle of cod liver oil and a tin of golden syrup are on the table before him and a large bag of kidneys and scotch oatmeal are positioned to his right. The sketch is entitled 'Sir Henry Irving preparing for the role of Napoleon' and is dated 1895.
