The 29 stages on the sample board are as follows:

1-3. Lacquer and hemp cloth are applied to a cypress wood base.

4. The surface is scraped flat with a blade.

5-7. Fine clay mixed with lacquer is applied as a filler and polished with a whetstone.

8-22. A smooth ground is built up by applying six progressively fine layers of lacquer mixed with clay. Each layer is polished with a whetstone.

23-28. Three coats of black lacquer are applied, each one polished with charcoal.

29. The surface is sealed with a thin coating of clear lacquer.
