Print of the actor/manager Mr. Martin Harvey (1863-1944) as Sidney Carton in The Only Way, ca. 1899
Born in 1863, John Martin Harvey was an English actor-manager, who took over the management of the Lyceum Theatre from Henry Irving in 1899. He had made his stage debut in 1881 and worked for Henry Irving’s company for 14 years - often playing the lead role on tour that Irving had played in London. His first production as manager at the Lyceum was The Only Way. This was an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel A Tale of Two Cities set in Paris during the French Revolution. Harvey played a heroic Englishman, Sydney Carton and was such a resounding success that he was regularly asked to revive the production. He was knighted in 1921.
