Music sheet for Songs from the Note Book of Jenny Lind, published by D'Almaine & Co., ca. 19th century.
The Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820-1887) first toured Britain in 1844 but came to London in 1847, making her debut at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her portrait was reproduced on snuff boxes, matchboxes and pocket handkerchiefs along with Jenny Lind soap, scent and candle snuffers.
The popularity of sheet music was partly due to the increase in ownership of pianos, especially after the introduction of upright pianos ca. 1827. 'Pianomania' spread among the middle-income levels of society during the 1840s which provided a market for more expensive music sheets.
