Sari and Matching Long-Sleeved Shirt

2011 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This sari and shirt ensemble is designed by Abraham & Thakore, one of India’s most well-established fashion and textile labels. The designers wanted to create a sharp urban/office look for a new generation of women. The sari and fabric for the shirt have been handwoven using the time consuming double-ikat technique which reproduces a tessellated houndstooth pattern associated with western clothing. The accompanying long-sleeved shirt is tailored in a western style and very unlike the sort-sleeved cholis that are usually worn with saris. Together the ensemble is a fusion of many cultural influences

SARI AND SHIRT Intended as a chic urban outfit, this sari was inspired by western office wear and is worn with a long-sleeved shirt. The Scottish houndstooth pattern is created using an Indian technique: a complex dyeing and weaving process called double ikat. Although the sari was designed in industrial Noida city, village craftsmen in Puttapaka in Telangana dyed its yarns and wove it into fabric.
