Black paper silhouette by shadow-puppeteer Lotte Reiniger of three women in Mikhail Fokine’s ballet Le Carnaval.
The silhouette shows three women on pointe in bonnets and crinolines facing left with their hands held crossed in front of themselves. It is mounted on cream paper with pink and black borders. Signed in pencil LR and the title CARNEVAL [sic] written on lower right.
Le Carnaval was a high-spirited ballet, inspired by commedia del arte, created by Mikhail Fokine’s in 1910 and presented by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes it was revived for de Basil’s Ballets Russes on 14 September 1933.
Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) created silhouettes of De Basil’s Ballets Russes for illustrations in periodicals and as souveniers sold through the book dealer Ifan Kyrle Fletcher.
