A song in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night inspired Potter to make this drawing of a fishing frog. She makes use of the white of the page to draw attention to the fish below the lily pads, linked to the vignette above only by the lilies’ trailing stems and a fish on the end of the line.

Drawn by Beatrix Potter, probably in 1905. Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.
