Professor Bert Codman, Mr. Punch and Stephen Morris

Photograph
1968
Artist/Maker

Professor Bert, or Albert Codman (1902-1969) is seen in this press photograph showing his glove puppet Mr. Punch to six-year old Stephen Morris outside his booth at Colwyn Bay. The photograph was taken for the Manchester Evening News and Chronicle, possibly to mark Toby the dog's last performance with Professor Codman on 12th September 1968.

Bert Codman was a third generation Punch Professor who worked at Colwyn Bay and Rhos on Sea. His father was Richard Mortimer Codman II (1870-1951) who in 1888 had taken over the Punch & Judy show outside Liverpool's Lime Street Station that had been established by his father, Richard Codman I (1832-1909). The caption to this photograph when published in a local newspaper noted that Stephen Morris was on holiday with his four year old sister Diane and their parents at Colwyn Bay when he was shown this hundred-year old Punch by Bert Codman.
