Stephen Rothholz is an established designer of accessories. Although he is probably now better known for designing jewellery for big names like Paul Smith, Hardy Amies and Nicole Farhi, his sunglasses were sold in many of London’s most fashionable boutiques throughout the 1980s. Each pair was handmade by Flairspecs, an East Finchley-based manufacturer of spectacle frames.

This particular example formed part of BodyMap’s ‘Isa Comet a Star, a Moon, A Sun Aura Racoon’ spring/summer 1986 collection.

Sunglasses, eye-shaped frames with monchrome striped detailing, Stephen Rothholz for BodyMap, London, 1986
Physical description
Sunglasses of clear plastic. The almond-shaped frames encase an open-weave textile, printed with black and white stripes radiating from the centre. The lenses are light blue-tinted, with a darker translucent applied surround forming a circular aperture.

Handmade. The materials were imported from Italy and purchased by Flairspecs from a wholesaler in Kentish Town.
