Place of origin |
This magazine cover represents an important period of graphic and magazine design in America and the work of one of the premier American designers of the late nineteenth century. Will Carqueville (1871-1946) was a painter and designer of lithographs who founded his own press in Chicago and designed for American literary magazines, notably Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, published in Philadelpha and running from 1868-1915. Carqueville’s style of simple outline and bold areas of colour reflected the influence of Japanese printing and French art nouveau.
