The vases have subtle shaded cloisonné enamels as well as clearly showing the development of shosen (limited wire) enamelling, a technique for which Namikawa Sosuke claimed credit. Sosuke later further developed this technique into musen (wireless) enamels which took their design inspiration from Japanese ink paintings and woodblock printed books showing scenes of birds and flowers. Sosuke was appointed Imperial Craftsman in 1896 and became one of the most important and influential artist-craftsmen of the Meiji period (1868-1912).
