Rudolf Bott (b.1956) is one of the most outstanding German silversmiths of his generation and the recipient of many prestigious awards. These include the Danner Foundation Prize (1990), the Bavarian State Prize at the Tenth Silver Triennial (1992), the Fredrich Becker Prize (1999), the Bavarian State Prize (2001) and the Kunstpreis der DG-Gebhard Fugel Preis (2011).

A deeply philosophical artist he has made an enormous contribution to the German contemporary silversmithing and jewellery scene. He is represented in many major German collections, both public and private. These include the Baden State Museum, Karlsruhe, the Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau, the Danner Collection, Munich, the Jewellery Museum, Pforzheim, the Museum of Applied Art, Frankfurt-am-Main and the Museum for Art and Industry, Hamburg.

He initially trained as a goldsmith in the workshop of G.A. Korff of Hanau and worked in the studios of Hermann Kunkler in Raesfeld, Max Pollinger in Munich Giampaolo Babetto in Aqua Petrarca, Italy before setting up his own workshop in 1989. From 1997 to 1999, he was a professor at the Pforzheim University School of Design but has otherwise worked independently.

Physical description
Container, silver with a lid, the body a plain cylinder with the circular base, slighly recessed. The lid, a circular disc which fits snugly inside the body, is surmounted by a "T" shaped handle, square in cross section. All surfaces are give a matt finish. The underside of the base, marked.

Marks and inscriptions
Marks include the the German state mark, a crown and moon, the crown of the German Reich (since 1884) and the number, 925, denoting sterling silver.

M.10:1&2-2014 Rudolf Bott is an award-winning silversmith who works with a range of metals and materials such as rock crystal. Bott’s practice explores the idea that individual materials have specific aesthetic forms. In Container II, Bott created the vessel and lid from simple, geometric forms with no decoration to highlight and celebrate the silver from which it is made. (12.12.2023)
