Cross

ca. 1890 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This filigree cross was described as 18th century, from Spain, when it was acquired by the Museum in 1890. It might have come from Spain, but it is not a traditional Spanish design, and was probably made shortly before 1890. It appears to have been put together from old filigree buttons with their shanks cut off; the ends of the shanks are still visible inside each rosette. The buttons are most likely to have come from the Netherlands, where such buttons, often called Zeeuwse knopen, are very common, although filigree buttons were also made n Spain.
