This rectangular table is carved with motifs taken from ancient jades and bronzes. Chinese nomenclature distinguishes tables with in-set legs and tables with legs at the corner. This table belongs to the latter category and is known as a 'zhuo'. Both categories had numerous uses and so cannot be classified by function. Long rectangular tables were used as writing desks or set against a wall in order to display flowers or ornaments.
