This is a rather rare engraving after a very famous painting; The Deluge also titled Winter, executed by Nicolas Poussin in 1660-64 and in the Louvre. The painting is part of a cycle of the four seasons and was extensively copied between the 17th and the 19th century.
Pierre Laurent (1739-1809) was a significant French engraver who specialised in the production of landscapes after such masters as Boucher, Berchem and De Loutherbourg. He was the author with Robillard-Peronville of the Musée Français, an album of plates recording the French national collection of paintings, sculptures and bas-reliefs, published in Paris, 1803-1809.
