Smokey Bear

Soft Toy
ca. 2000 (manufactured)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Smokey Bear is a well recognised character in the USA where the character has been used to teach forest fire safety since 1944. The cartoon characters from The Disney film Bambi were the first to appear in public safety campaigns about fire prevention, but after a year, new character was needed. His name was inspired by "Smokey" Joe Martin, a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department.
His slogan, Remember ... only YOU can prevent forest fires, was first coined in 1947 and in 2001 the words 'forest fires' were replaced with 'wildfires' to show that other areas can also be in danger.
