A kebaya is a long-sleeved blouse that was fastened at the front using three brooches (kerosang) joined by a chain, and usually worn with a sarong (skirt cloth) by Javanese, Malay or Peranakan Chinese women in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. This blouse is of lightweight cotton fabric with silk embroidery of peacock and peonies. It was probably made for a Peranakan Chinese (or Straits Chinese) in Malaysia.

Object history | The donor bought this kebaya in a small shop in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia about 1990. It was from a specialist tailor's shop that sold made-to-measure modern hand-embroidered kebaya but also sold some second-hand ones. |
