James Maskrey is highly skilled artist working in hot glass. He is based at the National GLass Centre where he teaches hot glass making. As well as teaching Maskrey has achieved a high level of succes as an artist in his own right. Maskrey's recent work focuses on his fascination with the Polar explorations of Scott and Shackelton.
'Antarctic Expedition' consists of a bottle (Winter Journey) and Cup (Cape Evans) which both refer to the Winter Journey expedition of 130 miles, carried out in temperatures of -60c and 24hr darkness, by Appsley Cherry-Garrard, Dr Edward Wilson and Birdie Bowers. This journey was made to collect Emperor penguin eggs from the rookery at Cape Crozier. These eggs were believed to be the missing evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds and were regarded as a major ornithological prize. Appsley Cherr-Garrard was the only survivor of this expedition.
The bottle contains written remnants of Scott's Terra Nova Expedition of 1911, while the cup's glass contents contains a photograph of the adventurers.

Antarctic Expedition
2013
James Maskrey is fascinated by journeys of discovery. This work refers to Captain Scott’s famous Antarctic expedition, in
particular a dramatic and arduous excursion to collect the eggs
of the Emperor penguin. The bottle contains diary extracts and the cup features a photograph taken during the expedition in 1911. The work freezes in time the memory of the voyage.
